Evidence
by James WhitePublished by MACK
James White's book is based on the original 1977 book Evidence by Larry Sultan and Mike Mandel. Sultan and Mandel did not work with their own photographs, but drew from the photo archives of more than a hundred U.S. government agencies. By selecting and sequencing the images, originally intended only as functional documents, they took on a whole new dimension. The authors have succeeded in creating a suggestive surreal narrative that challenges the original documentary nature of the photographs. The book belongs to one of the absolute classics and examples of editing mastery photographs.
Evidence influenced the painter James White, who drew inspiration from it for his black and white photographic paintings. In this new edition of Evidence, White works directly with photographs from the original series, editing them, creating collages and often painting directly into the photographs.
